This tour takes Southwest Odyssey Tours adventurers along The Turquoise Trail, the famed National Scenic Byway in the heart of central New Mexico. Travelers are guided through the scenic, diverse lands where early miners were in search of the beautiful opaque blue-green stone that lends its name to this historic route. Our first stop will be in historic Cerrillos where you will take the Turquoise Mine Tour and visit the Cerrillos Mining Museum, where you will learn how Native Americans valued the turquoise for its ritual significance and used it for both personal use and for trade. Our next stop will be for lunch at the Mine Shaft Tavern in the old coal mining town of Madrid. After lunch we travel down the backcountry road that leads to Galisteo, where a variety of different peoples and cultures have occupied the beautiful Galisteo Basin. Next, we work our way toward Lamy. Lamy remains virtually unchanged today and is still the main Rail Road stop for Santa Fe. Lamy was a railroad junction and still has trains running today with vintage passenger cars. Finally, we head back to Santa Fe and reflect on the fascinating sights we've seen on this gem of a trail.
